No list of top Canadian fighters is complete without mentioning Georges St-Pierre. In fact, you might as well dismiss any such list that doesn’t feature GSP at the top. He has a professional record of 20-2 with 14 of those wins coming in the UFC, recognized as the predominant mma organization in the world. He’s sitting on a seven-win streak with four successful title defenses. There is currently no viable contender for the welterweight belt. That, in itself, is an indication of how dominant he is.
So much has been written about Georges St-Pierre, it seems to be a disservice to the other promising and talented Canadian fighters who rarely get any attention. So here we are with a list of top Canadian fighters other than Georges St-Pierre. Read more »
All eyes will be on Vancouver June 12 when the city hosts its first major sanctioned mma event. And it doesn’t get more “major” than the UFC, who took it upon themselves to lobby the local government for sanctioning. They’ve held three events in Montréal and want very desperately to expand through all of Canada, to take advantage of the second largest mma audience in the world. The Vancouver show is a milestone. So why did we get stuck with such a boring card?
No offence to the fighters involved – I know they train their asses off to get in that octagon and provide the fans with great entertainment. But the matchups on this card are actually somewhat worse than the matchups on the card at UFC 114, which turned out to be quite a snoozefest. I talk about that Read more »
UFC 115 will be held in Vancouver, BC, Canada on Saturday June 12, 2010. It is the first sanctioned mma event to be held in the province of British Columbia and the fourth sanctioned event in all of Canada, where the sport is technically illegal, due mostly to outdated laws.
Dana White, president of the UFC, has said repeatedly that Canada is the second largest market, outside the United States, for mma. This is backed up by phenomenal pay-per-view buys across the country. (The sport is illegal to stage in Canada, but not Read more »

Although it sounds like some sort of national celebration, MMA Day is actually a grassroots movement in Ontario to encourage the provincial government to legalize MMA.
A rally will be held at 1PM at Queen’s Park in Toronto, Ontario on Saturday May 22. Organizers want MMA fans and supporters to come out and show the government and MMA critics alike that the sport is civilized and legitimate, that there are thousands who want to attend a major MMA event in Ontario, and that it is not dangerous to get so many fight fans in one place at one time.
If you are in the Toronto area — if you live in Ontario or even northern New York state — make sure you attend this event. You elected this government, now make them work for you!
To find out more about this event, check out the MMA Day Website (download event guide) or join them on Facebook.
UFC 113: Machida Vs. Shogun
Fighter Weigh-In
Many casual and frequent flier mma fans tend to never watch the pre-fight weigh-in session. It’s sometimes frivolous and long. And many people, particularly the casual mma fan, have no idea that the UFC makes a show of the fighters’ weigh-in, which is usually a day before the fight. The show is generally a good hype machine for promoting more viewers to the main show, as well as perhaps garnering more drama for a particular fight.
I wanted to post the weigh-in video for UFC 113 because it was cleanly and effectively edited down to roughly six minutes by mmafighting.com.
UFC 113: Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida Vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua 2
Kimbo Slice (4-1) shows he may have had a career as a linebacker with this no mercy football tackle on some poor thrill seeker:
When the UFC stages an event in the UK, they have a few British fighters on the card. A few months ago, when they were in Australia, there were a few Aussie fighters on the card. So it’s no surprise that UFC 113 in Montréal – the promotion’s third visit to the Great White North – will feature a number of Canadian fighters. Seven, to be exact, with two on the main card.
These aren’t no-name fighters to humour the host country. You’ll get to see both Sam Stout (four-time Fight of the Night winner) and Patrick Côté battle against top fighters Jeremy Stephens and Alan Belcher, respectively.
Finding top mma on television in Canada has been a more or less hit-and-miss process. Sure, there’s pay-per-view, but what about us poor schmucks who can’t afford that? If you subscribe to “extended” cable, you probably get Spike TV. Here you can watch many UFC events, as well as The Ultimate Fighter reality gameshow. And every once in a while, CBS will throw some mma event on in primetime. Most cable companies in Canada carry CBS affiliated channels on their basic service. (Unlike the United States, most homes in Canada have some sort of cable service.)
But where can I find a Canadian channel that carries mma? As you may know, if you read my previous post, mma is technically illegal in Canada. And while it is not illegal to show the sport on television, it sometimes feels like some channels are afraid of being prosecuted for it. I first saw mma while flipping the channels about five years ago. It was something from the UFC, but it was over too fast. And it was on TSN (The Sports Network).
TSN is the reigning king of sports channels in Canada, celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2009. Most in Canada joke that the ‘T’ stands for Toronto, since most of its coverage is centred there. Their headquarters are in Toronto. And Ontario is notorious for enforcing the anti-mma law. After seeing this fight on TSN, I continued to look for more, but there was none to be had.
The Ultimate Fighter began in January 2005 on Spike TV. At the time, Spike was a haven for Star Trek reruns … and that’s about it. So this show was kept off my radar until I happened across an ad for the live finale. Ooh, I thought, mma on TV! So I watched Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar beat the shit out of each other. How could one not be hooked after that? I watched a lot of mma on Spike after that!
A couple of years ago, Rogers Sportsnet in Canada started airing The Ultimate Fighter. The problem is that they tend to air it later than Spike, due to
Canadian laws regarding content. Spike airs it at 10PM, however cable companies in Canada tend to carry only the eastern feed of US cable channels, so it airs in Vancouver at Read more »
