Classic MMA Fight Video: Don Frye vs. Yoshihiro Takayama…and Frye’s Opinion of James Toney

Also, Frye gives his candid opinions on other professional sports figures coming into mma.

If you like all-out backyard brawls between two guys at the height of their manhood and blunt courageousness, then you’ll love the classic mma fight video of UFC Legend Don Frye vs. Japan’s mma fighter and professional wrestler Yoshihiro Takayama!

Don Frye, UFC veteran

This fight, which took place in June of 2002, displays arguably the greatest fighting spurts and exchanges in the history of mma! Don “The Predator” Frye (20-8) recently said that he’s probably done fighting. However, the 44 year old says he’s always open to the right fight … for the right money. Frye is quite possibly a future UFC Hall of Famer, having started out his career 15-1, beating many notable fighters.

Tom Selleck, actor

Frye is also a two-time UFC Tournament Champion, both in 1996.  He’s one of mma’s most rugged and toughest personalities, having had a few disagreements with Dana White in the past; he has had his share of run-ins with a few others in and around and near the mma world with his brash and say-as-you-go rhetoric.  Frye also gets credit from many people as he has a slight resemblance to actor Tom Selleck … if you’re comparing the 1980’s cop mustache.

Introducing: Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal

Outdated:  Well, I’m a bit upset that the fight between UFC legend Don “The Predator”  Frye vs.   Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal is cancelled! :-(   It was scheduled to go down this Friday at M-1 Global: Breakthrough, in Kansas City, Missouri…live on HDNet.

Apparently, Frye is still fighting.  It’s good to see!  Looking at Frye’s record, he hasn’t been the same since 2002, but still a very dangerous fighter at 43yrs. old.  Frye pulled out of the fight recently, presumably over disagreements with M-1 management, or not wanting to face the upstart fighter.

Who is King Mo you ask?
–Video Interview Below…

According to King Mo(205lbs) himself, he’s the baddest mofo in all of mixed martial arts.  The video below is clear evidence of his supreme confidence level.  Here at mmaviewers.com, that goes a long way….as long as you can prove it.  And along with that, King Mo has great quickness and athleticism, and a background in elite collegiate wrestling.    He’s sort of like Brandon Vera, a natural 205pounder who will never concede to believing they can’t concur both the light heavyweight and heavyweight UFC championships.  Sounds like someone has been drinking too much Evander Holyfield ageless juice.

Nevertheless, I can clearly see King Mo’s talents.   But I wonder how much pressure this 28 year is putting on  himself with all the bravo talk, considering that he’s just obscure 4-0.  But hey, I like his potential.  Between he and Bobby Lashley, I’ll give a very slight nudge toward Lawal because of his quickness and moxie.  He’s a NCAA Division II Wrestling Champion and a Div. I All-American from Oklahoma State University.  He beat the much bigger and favored Travis Wiuff in his debut by knockout(superman punch).

BUT, before you view his trash talking (some might call it buffoonery) video clip(allelbows.com), check out how King Mo Lawal gets down with his ring entrances.  Ring Entrances in Japan are classic.  Phil Baroni and Akihiro Gono have nothing on King Mo’s ring entrances:

King Mo’s Ring Entrance vs. Yukiya Naito, in Japan. fyi, ended in Knockout(Rd. 1).  mmaviewers.com can’t confirm or deny what King Mo meant by saying that those girls where indeed ‘his girls.’

.

Will King Mo live up to his own hype?  Time will tell.

Replacing Don Frye is Mark Kerr(15-10). Upon researching Mark Kerr on the net, I see how dominant this big man once was both in the UFC(2-time Heavyweight Champion), and the former stint in Pride.  Kerr started out 11-0, but hasn’t been the same since 2000.   He’s 40yrs. old now. I guess I have forgotten all about Kerr.

ADDENDUM, 2/16/10:
King Mo sounded defeated Mark Kerr 25seconds into the 1st round, by Punches.  King Mo has since fought and defeated journeyman Mike Whitehead via KO.  Lawal is rumored to face the higher ranked Gegard Mousasi in mid, 2010.

Coming soon….Quinton “Rampage” Jackson’s response to King Mo calling him out saying he calls Rampage “Bumpage” Jackson.  Hilarious stuff!!!!!!   But for now, it’s all about King Mo.
