Brock Lesnar & Frank Mir
Brock Lesnar (4-1) stormed onto the mma and UFC scene in February, 2008. The 32 year old former WWEntertainment wrestler, in just 2 fights later, was given a shot at the heavyweight belt in November of the same year. During that match, Lesnar dominated the ageless and iconic Randy Couture. And thus the dislike for Lesnar picked up steam.
The fact that Brock Lesnar was given a title shot so early had some of the loyal UFC fanbase to raise an eyebrow. Although the UFC heavyweight division has had a very recent resurrection, just last year there were no clear hierarchy as to who should get a title shot. Lesnar was vehement in protesting that he wanted to fight the best. And with that, one has to admire his toughness and willingness to put it all on the line so early in his mma career.
One thing Lesnar doesn’t have to worry about, is a loyal fan following. He owns the state of Minnesota fanbase. And with the WWE‘s massive fan following, he’s brought over some of those fans which has turned many into casual UFC fans. Some feel that Lesnar is just a big strong bully, who has very… …little mma technique to have an effective and top tier career. However, there is something to a guy who can come into the UFC with only a few years of mma training or less, to win perhaps the most mightiest belt, the heavyweight UFC belt.
Lesnar successfully defended his belt by knocking out ranked UFC veteran Frank Mir(13-4; 8 submissions). Mir is an elite grappler and has some of the best jiu-jitsu amongst any mma fighter. It was there second meeting, the first going to Mir via leg lock.
This video does a great job of displaying just how much skill and grappling technique Lesnar used to systematically defeat Mir.

It almost seems to some fans want to forget about Brock Lesnar’s collegiate wrestling background. Generally, the collegiate wrestlers of mma tend to collectively have their own fan followings. However, because of Brock’s brash and in your face bluntness, he hasn’t gained as much of a following as man UFC champions endure. Lesnar is totally unfazed by this. He’s a former NJCAA and NCAA Division 1 National Wrestling champion.
Note: Brock Lesnar, it has been reported, is on his way back from recovering from a physical illness that had many wondering if he’d ever fight again. He has reportedly lost about 20lbs at least. Mir recently stated that Lesnar would have a hard time winning consistently if he’s not walking around at 300lbs, then dropping to the max 265lbs for the fight. And Mir who’s sole mission is the beat Lesnar again, now feel that he needs to be bigger and stronger, and has since added a whopping 20lbs of muscle; looked massive in his last fight against Cheick Congo and is up to 265lbs himself.
If Mir defeats Shane Carwin(11-0) in March for a possible interim UFC hw belt, plan to see Lesnar/Mir 3 sometime this early Summer, 2010.
