Heath Herring, UFC & Pride Veteran

HERRING’S VIDEO INTERVIEW BELOW

Heath Herring, aka The Texas Crazy Horse, is one of the most interesting personalities of the current mma world. He’s known for his crazy hair colors, his “dramatically-driven” ring entrances and a likable toughness to take the fight to any fighter out there. As a heavyweight, he has one of the top submission win percentages, amassing 16 total wins by way of submission.

He has went the distance with Brock Lesnar, Vitor Belfort, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (twice).   And it took ten straight minutes for Fedor Emelianenko to take him out in a match in 2002, when Herring was just 24 years of age.  In my opinion, Herring has some very good fights left in him.  And surely Dana White, President of the UFC, wouldn’t mind having his infectious personality around for say, 3 more fights…..which are the remaining fights he has left on his UFC contract.

Many people should be reminded that Herring was the fighter who knocked out his opponent before the opening bell because his opponent laid a kiss on him during the face off.

Herring (28-14; 7 ko’s), is a veteran of both Pride Fighting (Japan) and the UFC. His fighting style includes sambo, kickboxing, muay thai,  and wrestling.  He went a very impressive 12-5 in Pride between 2000-2004.  However, he’s just 2-3 since fighting in the UFC.  Over his mma career, he’s defeated fighters such as Evan Tanner, Mark Kerr, Gary Goodridge, and Cheik Kongo.  The country guy from Waco, Texas is still just 31, but has already begun reaching for other career paths.  And the path that he’s chosen currently has been acting parts in many movies.  To name a few, he has a small role in movies such as Never Surrender and Salt.

The Texas Crazy Horse had poked fun at Brock Lesnar before they met in August, 2008.  Lesnar beat him around for 3 straight rounds, winning by majority decision.  After the winner was announced (in which there was no doubt of the who’d get the decision), Lesnar then proceeded to mimic Herring’s cowboy nature by lassoing him.  It was fun t.v., but many purist fans fell out of favor with the actions.   I say, there’s nothing wrong with fun.   Nonetheless, Heath showed a ton of fight against Brock.

Many mma fans may be a little disappointed that he seems the have put fighting on the back-burner.  However, it’s certainly not a bad thing that fighting has opened up other doors for him.
