Welcome Back Tim Sylvia….sort of….

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion

Tim Sylvia continues his climb back to respectability as he defeated Poland’s Mariusz Pudzianowski at Moosin: God of Martial Arts event this past Friday (5/21/10).  [video below] The fight took place in Worchester, Massachusetts as Sylvia looked to steal some of the mystique that has contributed to Mariusz being recognized as the five-time World’s Strongest Man.  Mariusz has a background in amateur boxing and kickboxing.

You would think that Sylvia would have home field advantage considering that he’s from nearby Maine.  However, considering that Massachusetts has a dense amassment of Poles, it doesn’t take long to recognize that Pudzianowski was the crowd favorite.

Sylvia lost many mma fans when he was knocked out by retired and out of shape pro boxer Ray Mercer, who was 48 years of age at the time.  The knockout came in just nine seconds.  It was Sylvia’s third straight loss and the third loss in his last four fights.  The former UFC heavyweight champion appeared to be headed towards retirement soon.

No one really knows how deep Sylvia’s determination runs to be a contending heavyweight mma fighter at a respectable age of 34.  His weight continues to hover around 300 pounds which is a far reach from his heavyweight championship days of 265 pounds.

As for Pudzianowki, I suspect he’ll fall a few spots down on my top up and coming mma heavyweight fighter rankings.   His cardio will be his first, second, and third priority before he fights his next fight.  He now stands at 2-1.  I suspect he’ll be back very soon, stronger than ever……
