Fighting Wednesday…Roy Nelson, Kenny Florian, and Takanori Gomi

Fight Card Below!

It’s free viewing time again (assuming that we now consider our cable tv bill a must have), as the UFC puts on a potentially very exciting fight card.  This event, UFC Fight Night (21) is oddly held during the middle of the week; 3/31/10, .  Nonetheless, it’s a nice time slot during prime time tv hours.    The rating will be very good for this event, considering the cast of characters.

Look no further than Roy “Big Country” Nelson.  He’s the big bellied, good ‘ole boy-lookin’ fella.  And he wants to make sure you see it all, rotund stomach and all.  I’m a fan of Roy Nelson, and he’s going up against a very fierce opponent in Dutchman Stefan Struve.  Struve is only 22 years old, but is a veteran of 22 pro fights already.  The 6’11″ Struve has won 3 straight since his TKO loss too Junior Dos Santos. 

Nelson/Struve is an intriguing matchup of heavyweights.  Both of these guys have good all-around games.  The veteran Roy Nelson has a black belt in bjj.  While Struve has 14 wins by submission.  And he’s consistent with his submission, having 7 of them end by triangle-leg hold.   But in his last fight, Struve proved that he’s capable, and fearless in standing and punching against Paul Buentello.   This fight has much significance, as both are looking for a title shot within the next year or if they continue to win.

This card also features 3 Japanese fighters.  Gomi, Uno, and Okami look to go 3-0. There’s also 4 Brazilian fighters on this card.   Let’s hope that Spike TV will be able to squeeze in as many fights as possible.

In the main event, Florian has been calling out the Japanese sensation (Gomi) for a few years now. Recently signing with the UFC, Gomi finally makes  his way across waters to settle the score with Florian.   Florian is known for having some of the most sharp and dangerous elbow strikes in mma, both standing and on the ground.  And this will be Gomi’s fight time fighting under mma rules that allow elbow strikes.  We’ll see how he makes the adjustments.
